Unidentified gunmen shot at the father of a National People’s Party (NPP) candidate in Manipur’s East Imphal district. According to Meghalaya Chief Minister and NPP President Conrad Sangma, the incident took place on Friday evening at Yairipok in Andro assembly constituency. Here some unidentified assailants shot and injured Shamjai Singh, father of NPP candidate from Andro constituency L Sanjay Singh, in the shoulder during election campaign.
A few days back there was also an incident of bomb blast near the house of an NPP candidate. Chief Minister Sangma had already expressed apprehension of attacks on his candidates in the state. Sangma reached the hospital and inquired about his condition. Sangma said that this is a very unfortunate incident. This can give an idea of the troubles of some people. In Manipur, the first phase of polling is to be held on February 28 in 38 assembly constituencies. The incident has deepened the fear of electoral violence in the state. Allegations of creating panic in rural areas in favor of the ruling camp are coming to the fore from some extremist organizations that have declared ceasefire with the central and state governments. However, the ruling party is denying it.
Meanwhile, the BJP government at the Center has given its full strength in the border state of Manipur. The chief ministers and union-provincial ministers of neighboring Assam and Tripura are already holding fronts in different areas. Next Tuesday, Prime Minister Modi himself will reach here to address the gatherings. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will also campaign here on Monday and Tuesday amid the BJP’s vigorous campaign.
