Vashishtha Narayan Singh: Today’s generation hardly knows about Vashishtha Narayan Singh of Bihar. A child born in a small village in the year 1942, who despite leading big institutions all over the world, ends up in poverty and destitution. A mathematician who challenged Einstein’s famous theory ‘Theory of Relativity’. Worked in prestigious institutions like NASA, Berkeley and IIT of America.
Vashishtha Narayan Singh’s life was surrounded by tragedy. Had been a topper of B.Sc and M.Sc in Patna Science College. He was considered a possible successor to India’s great mathematician Ramanujan, however, due to mental illness, his life took an unexpected turn and he disappeared into obscurity.

Vashishtha Narayan gained global recognition when he challenged Albert Einstein’s famous theory. Some people believe that when NASA’s computer broke down, he helped in the mathematical calculations for landing humans on the moon under the Apollo mission.
Son of a police constable, Vashishtha Narayan’s journey began at Netarhat School in Jharkhand and continued to Patna Science College, where his mathematical talent was noticed. The college principal soon sent him to a higher class, and he completed his PhD in 1969. Completed. Seeing his talent, Professor John L Kelly sent Vashishtha Narayan to study at the University of California, Berkeley, USA. After almost a decade, he returned to India and taught in prestigious institutes like IIT Kanpur, TIFR Mumbai and ISI Kolkata.
There was a tragic turn in his life, it was schizophrenia. Due to which they got divorced. Its impact was so great that teaching and learning also got affected. He was treated, but then suddenly he disappeared while traveling by train. Later he was found to be alive in his own village.
With the help of actor Shatrughan Sinha, he was admitted to NIMHANS, Bengaluru. From there he was treated at IHBAS Delhi, but Vashishtha Narayan continued to struggle with his illness. Despite the challenges, he was again appointed to teach at BNMU Madhepura. He died on November 14, 2019 at the age of 72. The Government of India posthumously honored him with the Padma Shri award for his contribution.
