Country India’s largest airline IndiGo has ordered 30 wide-body A350-900 aircraft. The company will have the option to buy 70 more such aircraft. IndiGo, which has been active for about 17 years, currently operates 350 narrowbody aircraft. However, the company has leased two Boeing 777 aircraft from Turkish Airlines for flights from Delhi and Mumbai to Istanbul. The company said in a statement that by ordering 30 A350-900 aircraft, it will join the companies operating wide-body aircraft.
Peter Albers told historical moment
IndiGo Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Peter Albers called it a ‘historic moment’. These aircraft have Rolls-Royce’s Trent XWB engine. These are expected to be supplied from early 2027. Indigo has more than 60 percent share in the domestic airline market. The company has rights to purchase 70 more aircraft of the Airbus A350 family.
Air India is the only company to operate A350.
Currently, Air India is the only Indian airline to operate the A350. Among domestic airlines, Air India and Vistara currently have wide-body aircraft in their fleet. While SpiceJet has leased some widebody aircraft. Indigo’s recent order has also come at a time when efforts are being made to make India a global aviation hub. The company had placed an order for 500 aircraft with Airbus in June last year. This was the largest order placed by an airline at one time.
