Los Angeles: The world’s famous social networking site Meta has taken a big decision before the start of elections in India and other countries including America. This is sure to be a big blow to all the political parties around the world. Also, this decision of Meta is a big shock for crores of users. It is noteworthy that Meta plans to end the ‘Facebook News’ feature for users in the US and Australia in early April and the company’s idea is to put less emphasis on news and politics. This clearly means that political parties will no longer be able to do their propaganda in the form of news on this app. There are elections in India in April and in America in November 2024. At such a time, this decision of Meta is also a big blow for the political parties around the world. Because now even political news will not be able to be played on this app.
This feature was discontinued in Britain, France and Germany last year. The ‘Facebook News’ tab was launched in 2019 and features news from small and local publications along with national and international news organizations. Meta says users will still be able to see links to news articles, and news organizations will still be able to post their news and promote the website, just like other individuals or organizations.
Why did Meta take this decision?
Meta has decided to de-emphasize news and political content after facing criticism over the past few years over its handling of disinformation on its platform. “This announcement is an extension of our years of work managing political content,” said Denny Lever, a Meta spokesperson. It’s based on what people want from us.” Meta also said the ‘News’ tab will not impact its ‘fact check’ network and the way it reviews misinformation. However, disinformation still remains a challenge for the company even as the presidential election process continues in the US. (AP)
