People were fired upon in Peshawar
After Imran’s arrest, his supporters also targeted military bases in Peshawar. Supporters of Imran’s party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) have turned violent in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The government here has also been requested to deploy the military. There are reports of four people being killed in police firing. A video of the incident has also surfaced. People say that the provincial agencies and the police force have turned peaceful protests into violent ones. The video shows how the police targeted the protesters.
This incident has been termed as a violation of human rights. Retired Major of Pakistan Army tweeted that the situation in the country is now being fought within the army itself. Major (retd) Adil Raja wrote in a tweet that the way Sen is handling the whole situation has led to differences among the army commanders.
Arrest close to Imran
Asad Umar, a close aide of Imran Khan and General Secretary of PTI, has also been arrested. Umar has been arrested by the Counter Terrorism Department from the Islamabad High Court itself. PTI has appealed in the Supreme Court against Imran’s arrest. Imran’s arrest has been declared legal by the Islamabad High Court. The country’s home ministry said the army would work closely with the district administration to restore law, order and peace. The Punjab Police said that 945 people have been arrested from across the province for disturbing the peace and indulging in violence.
More than 130 police personnel injured
In a statement, the police of the Punjab province said, “The miscreants involved in acts of violence, vandalism, damage to public and private property have been arrested across the province. The police said in a statement that more than 130 police officers and law enforcement personnel were seriously injured during the violent protests by supporters of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party. A Punjab Police spokesperson said that more than 25 vehicles belonging to police and government agencies were destroyed and burnt. He said the protesters attacked more than 14 government buildings, ransacked them and caused serious damage to government property.
