According to a media report, Pakistan has issued a citizenship certificate to a woman jailed in India, paving the way for her return to the country with her four-year-old daughter. Home Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said on Thursday that his ministry has issued citizenship certificate for Sumaira, who is in a detention center in Bengaluru, Dawn newspaper reported.

He said the certificate has been sent to the Ministry of External Affairs and Pakistan’s High Commission in New Delhi will issue a travel document to him, allowing the woman to return to Pakistan with her daughter. His matter was raised in the Senate on Monday by Senator Irfan Siddiqui of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
According to a BBC report, Sumaira, a resident of Qatar, married an Indian boy who took her to India without a visa. Sumaira was later arrested and sentenced to three years in prison. Two months later she gave birth to a baby girl. Her husband left her while in custody. The report said that after her release from jail, Sumaira has been living with her daughter in a detention center in Bengaluru.
Meanwhile, Bengaluru jail authorities on Friday said they are yet to receive any communication from the Indian government or Pakistan authorities about the release of Pakistani citizenship to Sumaira.
