Henry Nicholls (105) scored an eighth Test century as New Zealand took a 387-run lead in the first innings on the second day of the first Test against South Africa, while the visitors lost three wickets for 34 runs in the second innings as well.
New Zealand scored 482 runs in the first innings with the help of Nicholls century, wicketkeeper Tom Blundell’s 96, Colin de Grandhomme’s 45 and South African-origin Neil Wegner’s 49. South Africa team was out for 95 in the first innings. Matt Henry, who took seven wickets for 23 runs on the first day, played an innings of 58 runs at number 11.
Henry and Blundell added 96 runs for the last wicket. Nine overs fell on South Africa before the end of the second day’s play. On the very second ball of the second innings, he lost the wicket of Sarel RV.
Captain Dean Elgar was dismissed without opening the account while Aiden Markram could only score two runs. South Africa were three for four after which Temba Bavuma (22) and Rasi van der Dussen (nine) took charge.
