During elections, there is a cycle of allegations and counter-allegations and old photos, videos and excerpts from speeches are also used a lot. Taking advantage of the opportunity, some people also share fake photos or videos and such videos or photos become increasingly viral during elections. In one such recent case, a photo of bundles of notes kept in the car is becoming increasingly viral on social media. It is being said to be the car of a BJP MLA. But when the fact of this photo was checked, it was proved to be completely fake.
Two photos are going viral on social media, in one of which some policemen are standing with a white car. Whereas in the second photo, cardboard cartons filled with notes are shown. This photo is being shared with the claim that police have recovered an amount of Rs 20 thousand crores from the car of BJP MLA Sudhir Gadgil.
vishvasnews.com Investigated the viral photo and claim and found that it is completely false. Fact check done at various levels found that both the pictures are from different incidents. The special thing is that these pictures with the same claims have already been made viral on social media in 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2023.
According to vishvasnews.com, Facebook user Amit, while sharing the viral collage, has written, “20 thousand crores were seized from the car of BJP MLA Sudhir Gadgil.” It is written inside the picture used in the post, “Congratulations to Modi ji, new currency worth Rs 20 thousand crore has been seized from the car of BJP MLA Sudhir Gadgil. Spread this news like wildfire, because our Indian media does not have the capacity to show this.”
fact check
vishvasnews.com in its fact check found that the first picture in which some policemen are seen with a vehicle, when checked in Google reverse image, it was found that this picture was published along with a news published in the year 2016. The viral picture was used in a news published in Marathi language on ABP Majha on 15 November 2016. It was written in the newspaper that “A new explanation has emerged in the case of recovery of Rs 6 crore from Tuljapur, Osmanabad. Sudhir Gadgil has made it clear that this amount is not the personal money of Ganesh Gadgil, brother of BJP MLA Sudhir Gadgil, but belongs to the bank. Ganesh Gadgil is the Chairman of Sangli Urban Bank. This amount was being taken in the name of Sangli Urban Bank. The Election Officer has given a letter to the District Magistrate saying that there was no responsible bank official or security guard with the vehicle while carrying the amount of Rs. 6 crores, hence the entire amount has been deposited in the District Treasury.”
After searching the second picture, which has a cardboard carton filled with currency notes, on Google reverse image, it was found that the information related to the viral picture was found in the news published on 17 November 2017 on the website of The Times of India. According to the news, “In November 2017, the Income Tax Department had raided the Delhi house of National Stock Exchange broker Sanjay Gupta. During this period the department had recovered Rs 11 crore cash. The viral photo was taken during that time.”
Sudhir Gadgil was contacted regarding these pictures. He had told that this picture is from the year 2016. One of his brothers is the chairman of the Co-operative Bank in Sangli and this was the money of his bank, which people had deposited during demonetization. This was around Rs 6 crores. He has no connection with this incident.
