new Delhi . Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday urged children in the 12-14 age group to be vaccinated and all those above 60 to get the ‘precautionary’ vaccine. In a series of tweets, the Prime Minister said, “Today is an important day in India’s efforts to vaccinate our citizens. From now on, youth in the age group 12-14 are eligible for the vaccine and all those above 60.” People are eligible for the precautionary dose. I urge people in these age groups to get vaccinated.”
He said India’s vaccination campaign, which is the largest in the world, is science-driven. In another tweet, the PM said, “We started vaccine development in early 2020 to protect our citizens and strengthen our fight against the pandemic.”
In January 2021, a vaccination campaign was launched for doctors, healthcare and frontline workers. He said that the aim is to ensure that those at the forefront of the fight against COVID get proper protection at the earliest.
Prime Minister Modi said that India’s vaccination efforts have made the global fight against COVID-19 stronger.

Talking about the elderly, the PM said that in March 2021, vaccination was opened to people above 60 years of age and those above 45 years of age. Later, vaccination was opened to everyone above the age of 18. This should make every Indian proud that vaccines are free for those who want it.
On India’s total immunization, he said that India has given more than 180 crore doses, which includes more than 9 crore doses in the 15-17 age group and more than 2 crore precautionary doses. It is an important safeguard against COVID for our citizens.
Another of his tweets said, “In the last one year, India’s vaccination campaign has been people driven. Unlike other countries, where we are seeing a lot of vaccine hesitation, people here not only took their doses but also urged others to get vaccinated at the earliest. Glad to see that.”
Appreciating the efforts of the states in the vaccination campaign, the PM said that many states, especially the hilly states and where tourism is important, have achieved total immunization coverage and many large states have also performed well.
Talking about the Vaccine Maitri programme, Prime Minister Modi said, “In line with India’s ethos of caring for the entire planet, we have sent vaccines to many countries under the Vaccine Maitri programme.
