Expansion
Several days have passed since Russia’s attack on Ukraine. Apart from Kyiv, the Russian army has also surrounded Jarkiev, the capital of Ukraine. During this, Ukraine is also getting military help from many countries. Importantly, Ukraine had applied for NATO membership, but it has not yet been approved. Although Ukraine also received security guarantees from US-UK after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, both countries could not save it from Russian attack. In such a situation, the question arises that if Ukraine joined NATO, would it get help? Isn’t his condition also like Turkey? What are the rules of the NATO Charter formed in 1949 and how do the countries involved in it get help? Know everything in this special report…
Ukraine has applied for NATO
After Russia’s attack, Ukraine is constantly seeking help from countries around the world. Initially, he had also accused himself of leaving himself alone. In fact, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Friday (25 February), ‘I asked 27 European leaders today whether Ukraine would become a member of NATO…’ I did not get an answer. Significantly, Ukraine had applied for NATO membership, but it has not yet been approved.
Would Ukraine get help if it had joined NATO?
Let us tell you that Ukraine had asked NATO for help, but it refused. NATO said it was not a member of the coalition. Now the question is, if Ukraine became a member of NATO, would it have helped in the event of an attack by Russia? Actually, it is not so, because any country included in NATO is helped according to the rules of NATO Charter. This can be understood from the case of Turkey. In fact, two years ago in February 2020, Syrian soldiers killed 34 Turkish soldiers in Idlib province. Turkey had sought help from NATO in this matter, which was turned down, while Turkey has been a member of NATO since 1952.
What are the rules of NATO Charter?
Significantly, when World War II was ending and the Cold War between the US-Soviet Union was beginning, NATO was formed in 1949. Initially, there were 12 member countries in this organization, whose number has now increased to 30. Many of these countries joined NATO after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. There are 14 articles in the Charter of NATO, of which Article five is the most important. In fact, under this rule, NATO guarantees that if one of its members is attacked, it will activate its collective military response mechanism.
This rule worked only once
Interestingly, Article 5 was used only once in 71 years of NATO history. Actually, when there were 9/11 terrorist attacks in America, then this rule was used. Explain that for collective action under Article 5, it is very important for all the members of the coalition to agree.
