Indian The Reserve Bank (RBI) on Monday told what percentage of Rs 2000 notes have returned to the banks. RBI said that about 97.69 percent of Rs 2,000 notes have returned to the banking system. RBI said that now only Rs 2000 notes worth Rs 8,202 crore are with the people. RBI had announced to withdraw Rs 2000 denomination bank notes on May 19, 2023. The central bank said in the statement that the total value of Rs 2000 notes in circulation as on May 19 was Rs 3.56 lakh crore. It has now reduced to Rs 8,202 crore on March 29, 2024. According to the statement, thus, 97.69 percent of the Rs 2000 notes in circulation on May 19, 2023 have been returned. RBI said that Rs 2000 bank note remains legal currency. People can deposit or exchange Rs 2000 bank notes at 19 RBI offices across the country.
Last date in banks was 7th October 2023
People can send Rs 2000 bank notes from any post office to any issue office of RBI to deposit in their bank accounts in the country. Entities holding such notes were initially asked to exchange them or deposit them in bank accounts by September 30, 2023. Later the deadline was extended till October 7, 2023. Deposit and exchange services in bank branches were closed on October 7, 2023.
Rs 2000 notes can be deposited in 19 offices of RBI
People have been provided the option to exchange the notes or deposit the same amount in their bank accounts at 19 RBI offices from October 8, 2023. The 19 RBI offices offering bank note deposits/exchange are in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram. . It is noteworthy that after Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 bank notes were removed from circulation in November 2016, Rs 2,000 bank note was introduced.
