The government has notified certain amendments in census rules to allow online self-counting in the upcoming census and the National Population Register (NPR). This announcement was made in 2020 but has now been notified through rules.
In a gazette notification issued on Friday (March 11, 2022), the government amended the Census Rules, 1990. This is because “electronic form” and “self-enumeration” can be included in the schedule of questions to be asked during the census. The amendment has been inserted in clause C of Rule 2, which deals with definitions.
