Although there have been many criminals in the history of crime in the country, some have become infamous due to their crimes. Psycho killer named M. Jaishankar was one such criminal, who within four years created his fear in the whole of South India. Jaishankar, a truck driver by profession, carried out about 30 rapes, 15 murders, most of which were targeted at women.
M. Jaishankar, a resident of Salem, Tamil Nadu, was a truck driver. There was a complete family full of wife and three daughters but he made women in the society feel insecure with his exploits. The first case was registered in July 2009 against Jaishankar, who entered the world of crime in the year 2008. In which he brutally killed a 45-year-old woman after raping her.
He then targeted a dozen women within a month of the same year. In all the incidents, first there was rape then there was murder. Jaishankar was a truck driver by profession, so he had carried out many incidents on the way. Most of these incidents happened with sex workers who were abducted from the dhabas built on the side of the highway.
The police was behind Jaishankar but remained out of the grip of the law for a long time. Jaishankar’s name came into the limelight when he targeted a woman policeman on 23 August 2009. This lady policeman had come for temporary duty in the arrangement of the program of the then Chief Minister. In this incident all the ways were pointing towards Jaishankar.
After weeks of effort, the body of this lady policeman was recovered on 19 September. After this the local police started a massive operation to nab Jaishankar. On 19 October 2009, two months after the incident, Jaishankar was captured and sent to the Central Jail. After this, his case went to the fast truck court on 17 March 2011, where he was accused of 13 murders and rape.
When he was being taken back to the Central Jail during his court appearance, he escaped by dodging the police at the Salem bus station. Panicked by the incident, a policeman shot himself two days later. After absconding, Jaishankar stayed in Karnataka and that too carried out half a dozen incidents. Two months later in May. In 2011, he was arrested from Karnataka.
After being arrested from Karnataka, Jaishankar was sent to Parappana Agrahara Central Jail in Bangalore after serving him a 10-year sentence. According to reports, he once again escaped from jail in the year 2013, after which a reward of five lakhs was announced on him. It is said that after his absconding, the administration had forbidden the women to come out late at night.
He was again apprehended on 6 September 2013 during a search operation of several days. He was then kept under 24/7 CCTV surveillance and a hi-tech cell. Along with this, the treatment of his illness was also being done inside the jail. After spending several years in jail, on 27 February 2018, Jaishankar committed suicide by slitting his throat with a shaving blade in the Central Jail.
