Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi had contested from two places but lost in both the places. One of the opposition candidates who defeated him is the son of a sweeper and the other an eye specialist, who quit his job to give light to the people. Both the men who defeated the CM in Punjab proved to be really common man.
Labh Singh Ugoke (35), who defeated him from the Bhadaur assembly seat in Punjab, works in a mobile repair shop. He is the son of a woman working as a sweeper in a government school, while his father works in the fields. Delhi CM and Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal said after the victory in the state that “a common man thinks what he can do, but if he wants, the common man can do anything.”
Labh Singh Ugoke (35) had said in his election affidavit that he had only one Hero Honda motorcycle, which he had bought about 8 years back. He had claimed that he would create history by defeating Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi. He really managed to do so.
When he took over the command of Punjab, he had said that he would give a new direction to the state and take it on the path of development. The Congress party had announced him as the next Chief Minister of the state before the elections. In the election, he stood from two places Chamkaur Sahib and Bhadaur, but he had to face defeat in both the places. The defeat of the current Chief Minister from two places each is a big setback for the party and Channi.
On the other hand Dr. Charanjit Singh (60), an ophthalmologist turned Aam Aadmi Party worker who defeated CM Charanjit Singh Channi in his stronghold Chamkaur Sahib, proved to be a major force in the 2022 assembly elections. Till a few years back an eye surgeon at PGIMER in Chandigarh, Dr Singh is a philanthropist who quit his job to set up his own clinic in Morinda and started organizing free eye camps for the poor in the area.
Later, he established Shubh Karman Hospital in Morinda. He came in contact with many philanthropic clubs and was associated with the SC Cell of the Congress Party for many years. He was also a contender for party ticket.
