Murugan had criminal cases registered against him in about 60 heinous crimes in different districts of the state.
Giving details about the killing of Niravi Murugan, a resident of Thoothukudi district, Tirunelveli Superintendent of Police P Saravanan said that the search was on for Murugan as he was wanted in a robbery incident. In such a situation, when Dindigul sub-inspector Isaki Raja and his team surrounded Murugan near Kalakadu on Wednesday.
Murugan attacked a police officer with a sickle after he surrounded himself with a police team. Meanwhile, in self-defense, the police officer fired a gun in which Murugan died. According to Tirunelveli Superintendent of Police P Saravanan, a case has been registered at Kalakadu police station regarding the incident and a detailed account of the entire incident will be sent to the magistrate.
Apart from this, the body of Murugan has been sent to Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital for postmortem. At the same time, four policemen who suffered head and chest injuries have also been treated at the district hospital. The SP said that around 60 cases (including murder) were registered against Murugan in Thoothukudi, Madurai and Erode among other districts.
According to the police, he used to target women especially at gunpoint. After the death in the encounter, the surrounding areas are being interrogated. Also, the alleged encounter site has been sealed from all sides.
