New Delhi. Congress leaders do not seem to agree on the controversial statement of TMC MP Mahua Moitra about Maa Kali. On Wednesday, two leaders in the Congress have different opinions on this issue. At the same time, Mahua’s party Trinamool Congress TMC has distanced itself from his statement. The party has also said that wherever cases have been registered against Mahua, they have to be seen by the MP. In fact, Mahua had given a controversial statement on Tuesday in a TV channel debate on showing mother Kali smoking a cigarette in Leena Manimekalai’s film ‘Kaali’. Mahua had said that she knew Maa Kali as such a goddess, to whom meat and liquor are offered.
People must be careful when they play with the emotions of people which are reflected in such symbols, culture and faith: Congress’s Abhishek Singhvi on TMC’s Mahua Moitra’s comments on Goddess Kaali pic.twitter.com/KL4OxZbfrt

Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi said that we do not want to comment about other parties. Yet I believe there is a need to strike a balance regarding our beliefs and symbols. He said that our culture resides in the hearts and no one should despise it. We need to beware of such people who play with the sentiments of their symbols, culture and trust of the people. That is, clearly Singhvi did not declare Mahua’s statement as right for the society and indirectly instructed to avoid such statements.
1/2 I am no stranger to malicious manufactured controversy, but am still taken aback by the attack on @MahuaMoitra for saying what every Hindu knows, that our forms of worship vary widely across the country. What devotees offer as bhog says more about them than about the goddess.

On the other hand, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor from Thiruvananthapuram came out in support of Mahua. He said that after Mahua Moitra’s statement on mother Kali, he was taken aback by whatever is being said against him. Tharoor said that Mahua has said what all Hindus know and believe. The Congress, however, has refrained from saying anything officially on Mahua’s statement. The party has not commented publicly on the matter so far.
