Summary
The draft resolution calls for rapid, safe and unhindered access to humanitarian aid to those in need in Ukraine to protect individuals in vulnerable situations, including humanitarian personnel and children.
The UN Security Council will vote on a draft resolution tabled by the US and Albania, which calls for condemnation of Russian aggression, assault and violations of Ukrainian sovereignty. It is a move that will seek to isolate Russia, a permanent and veto-powered member state. The draft calls on Russian forces to withdraw from Ukraine unconditionally immediately.
Voting on this proposal will be held early Saturday morning Indian time. The resolution committed to Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity, and called the Russian attack a violation of international peace and security. The UN resolution also calls for an immediate reversal of Ukraine’s decision to recognize some areas in the Donsk and Luhansk regions as independent states. This was said to be contrary to the principles of the Charter of the United Nations. Announcement of the United Nations to give 20 million dollars to help Ukraine
Following the Russian attack, the UN has announced an immediate $20 million aid to intensify UN humanitarian operations in the war-torn country. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the UN and its humanitarian allies are committed to helping the Ukrainian people in their time of need, no matter who and where they are.
“As the death toll is rising, we are seeing fear, pain and terror in every corner of Ukraine,” Guterres said. In such a crisis innocent people always pay a heavy price. Martin Griffiths, the UN’s head of humanitarian operations, said $20 million from the UN’s Central Emergency Response Fund will go to help emergency operations in eastern Donsk and Luhansk and other regions of the country. Cooperation will also be made under this in providing help in health care, shelter, food, water etc. to the people affected by the conflict, he said.
After Ukraine, there are concerns about security in Taiwan too: Report
The Russian attack on Ukraine has drawn world attention elsewhere. This place is Taiwan, the sovereignty of which China is already eyeing. Some analysts have compared the Chinese threats to the Ukraine attacks to assert their control over self-ruled Taiwan. Analysts fear that China may consider an attack on Taiwan like Russia.
Let us tell you that China has already been threatening to conduct military operations in Taiwan. China’s attention has been drawn to Taiwan since President Tsai Ing-we took office in 2016 with an inclination towards the freedom of democracy. Cao-Cheng Wang, Professor of Strategic Studies at the Institute for International Affairs and Tamkang, said that the US probably attaches more importance to Taiwan, so we will have to see how this conflict will turn out. Taiwan’s ruling party MP Wang Ting-yu said, “We cannot sit on the edge in the current situation.” Li Minjiang, a Chinese expert from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, said military action on Taiwan is unlikely at the moment.
Taiwan claims, 9 Chinese fighter planes entered our defense sector
Amidst Russia-Ukraine tensions, China has also rekindled an old dispute by claiming Taiwan as its part. Taiwan has claimed that 9 fighter planes of China have infiltrated Taiwan’s air defense area. Chinese fighter planes have been infiltrating Taiwan’s air defense zone several times in the past. In November last year, 27 Chinese fighter jets infiltrated Taiwan’s airspace.
