New Delhi. The Supreme Court on Friday refused to entertain petitions seeking postponement of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-PG 2022) scheduled to be held on May 21, saying it would lead to “chaos and uncertainty”. Along with Justice Surya Kant, Justice D.Y. A bench headed by Chandrachud said that the postponement of the examination will adversely affect the patient care as well as the more than two lakh students who have registered for the examination.
The bench said that since the country is back on track after the outbreak of the pandemic, the timetable has to be followed and any delay in conducting the examination will result in less number of resident doctors.
The apex court’s order came on petitions by doctors seeking postponement of the Post Graduate (NEET-PG) 2022 examination, citing the issue of conflict with the ongoing counseling for NEET-PG 2021. Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati represented the Center in the apex court.
Dismissing the plea for postponement of the examination, the bench said that the request cannot be entertained, as it would affect the care of the patient and the career of the doctors. It insisted that these are matters related to the policy domain.
The bench said more than two lakh doctors have registered and if the examination is postponed further, it will have an adverse effect.
The Center argued that the academic session was, however, scheduled to begin from May 1. However, it will start from September 1 for this academic year, therefore, further delaying the examination is not in the best academic interest of the students.
