Rampur Lok Sabha seat is witnessing a tough contest between BJP candidate Ghanshyam Lodhi and SP candidate Maulana Mohibullah Nadvi. Azam Khan had won from here in the 2019 general elections, but later due to his conviction, he lost his membership and BJP snatched this seat from him in the by-election. Ghanshyam Lodhi was elected MP in this election. This time also BJP has given ticket to Ghanshyam from here. BSP has fielded Zeeshan Khan.
Unemployment is a big issue in Rampur. The youth here go outside Rampur and work. Apart from employment, lack of doctors in medical colleges, government hospitals, electricity and road facilities in rural areas etc. are the major problems here.
Rampur Lok Sabha seat has been dominated by Samajwadi Party especially Azam Khan. But this time due to divisions in the party, this seat is proving difficult for the Samajwadi Party. Actually, after the election announcement, Akhilesh Yadav had gone to meet Azma Khan lodged in Sitapur jail. Azam Khan had asked Akhilesh to contest elections from Rampur. On this, Akhilesh Yadav had talked about making his nephew Tej Pratap Singh contest from here. But Azam Khan group opposed Tej Pratap Singh. On this, Akhilesh Yadav declared Maulana Mohibullah of Delhi as the SP candidate. This increased further resentment among the people here. Former SP District President Virendra Goyal has openly announced that he will support BSP candidate Zeeshan. Apart from Virendra Goyal, current District President Ajay Sagar, State Secretary Akhilesh Gangwar and Omendra Chauhan are also staying away from campaigning.
Opposition to the SP candidate by Azam Khan’s supporters and support for the BSP candidate by the former district president of SP will also weaken the SP candidate here.
On the other hand, BJP has taken advantage of this split in Samajwadi Party and has put all its strength in the election campaign. BJP National President JP Nadda, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and many ministers have come to Rampur. On the other hand, no one from Samajwadi Party has come yet for election campaign. There are about 8 lakh Hindu voters and more than 9 lakh Muslim voters in Rampur. Elections for Rampur Lok Sabha seat are to be held on April 19 under the first phase.
