Colombo. Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has declared a state of emergency in the country, giving security forces the right to arrest and detain suspects with immediate effect. Rajapaksa has issued a gazette declaring a public emergency after hundreds of protesters gathered in the capital and many of them tried to storm the president’s residence to protest the government’s poor management of economic policies.
The president said he believed “a public emergency has been imposed in Sri Lanka, which requires the enforcement of strict laws.”
“The gazette has been issued keeping in view the prevailing situation in the country and in the interest of public safety, security of public order and maintenance of supplies and services essential to the life of the community,” a statement said.
