The Supreme Court on Wednesday suggested that Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ should be renamed as several cases are pending in courts seeking a stay on the film’s release. The proposed date of release of the film is February 25.
A bench of Justices Indira Banerjee and JK Maheshwari was considering an appeal filed against an order of the Bombay High Court. The High Court had upheld the stay of the summons issued by a Mumbai court against the producer of the film Gangubai Kathiawadi, actress Alia Bhatt, writer S Hussain Zaidi etc on a complaint of criminal defamation. Gangubai’s adopted son has challenged the High Court’s decision through advocates Arun Kumar Sinha and Rakesh Singh.
The bench sought to know from the counsel for the petitioner whether his prayer would be fulfilled by the name change of the film. Justice Banerjee said, ‘Is it possible to change the title?’ But the counsel for the petitioner insisted on an interim stay on the release of the film. At the same time, it was said on behalf of the respondents that the name change would not be possible a day before the release of the film. The hearing will continue on Thursday as well.
