The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to interfere in the issue of reserved seats for SC, ST and OBC categories in the National Defense Academy (NDA). The top court said that social revolution does not come in one night, it takes time. Along with this, the court has given time till July to the central government to study the appointments and induction of former women cadets of NDA into the country’s armed forces.
A bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and MM Sundaresh told the petitioner seeking seat reservation for SC (Scheduled Castes), ST (Scheduled Tribes) and OBCs (Other Backward Classes) in the NDA that social revolution does not come in one night and It takes time. The bench said that we will not hear on the reservation. We will look into the issue of women’s admission in these educational institutions which are only for boys.
With this, the Supreme Court fixed July 19 as the next date of hearing in the matter. The bench has also asked to produce the information of the study. The inclusion of women cadets in the NDA has been a major policy decision. The Center in its affidavit has said that sufficient time is needed to consider the long-term implications for induction and deployment of former NDA women cadets in the armed forces.
The Central Government had filed this affidavit as per the directions of the Supreme Court on a petition filed by advocate Kush Kalra regarding the figures of female candidates who appeared in the NDA examination in the year 2021 and the number of women included. It said that a total of five lakh 75 thousand 854 candidates had applied, three lakh 57 thousand 197 had taken the examination and 8009 had passed, including 1002 women.
