Former Indian football team midfielder and East Bengal club’s legendary footballer Surjit Sengupta passed away on Thursday. He breathed his last at the City Hospital in Kolkata. Surjeet was battling the corona virus for a long time. He was 71 years old. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has also expressed grief over the death of Surjit.
Surjeet came under the grip of corona virus only last month, after which he was undergoing treatment. Surjeet was on ventilator since last week. He was also part of the Indian team that won the bronze medal at the 1970 Asian Games. Surjeet started his football career with Khidirpur club. He also played football for three big clubs in Kolkata. Surjit has played for Mohun Bagan, Mohammedan Sporting and East Bengal team.
Mamta Banerjee paid tribute to Surjit. He tweeted- Today we lost the legendary star footballer Surjit Sengupta. He was the heartthrob of football fans and an outstanding national player. Along with this, he was also an ideal human being. He will always be in our hearts.

Apart from this, he was also a part of the team in friendly matches against UAE and Bahrain. Surjit played two seasons for Mohun Bagan in 1972 and 1974. After this he played for East Bengal for six years. He was made the captain of East Bengal in 1978.
Surjit was part of the East Bengal team that won the Calcutta Football League title six times in a row between 1970 and 1976, besides winning the IFA Shield six times and the Durand Cup three times. Surjeet scored 92 goals for East Bengal. In 2018, he was also honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the East Bengal Club.
