Afghanistan: The Taliban publicly hanged a man convicted of murder in northern Afghanistan on Monday in a stadium as thousands of people witnessed it. According to an eyewitness, the execution took place in the city of Shibirgan, the capital of Jowzjan province, where the victim’s brother shot the convict five times with a rifle.
There was tight security near the stadium
The eyewitness, who did not wish to be named, said there was tight security around the stadium. This was the fifth public execution since the Taliban took power after US and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) troops completely left Afghanistan in August 2021.
Officials did not immediately comment
Taliban government officials did not immediately comment on the matter. A statement said that the execution was carried out on Monday after the approval of the country’s three high courts and Taliban’s supreme leader Mullah Hibtullah Akhundzada.

According to the statement, Nazar Mohammad of Bilchirag district of Faryab province, who was hanged, had killed Khal Mohammad, a resident of Faryab, and the murder took place in Jowzjan. On Thursday, the Taliban hanged two people convicted of murder in the southeastern Ghazni province.
