New Delhi. Discounts, cashback and subscriptions are definitely something that online shoppers fall in love with. If seen, the entire online market depends on these three things. But, do you know that after luring these things on the e-commerce platform, companies cheat the customers. First they get the subscription done in the name of discount and cashback and later they do not even make any payment.
In fact, a survey has revealed that most of the customers were lured towards online platforms in the name of cashback and subscription but after joining the platform, they were not paid anything. The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) on Tuesday identified 13 types of ‘dark patterns’ which constitute misleading advertising or unfair trade practices or violate consumer rights. These include trends such as luring people to subscribe and reducing prices.

What does the report say
‘LocalCircles’ report says that 62 percent of the users of online payment platforms surveyed have felt that they have been used as bait. Cashback was advertised to woo them, but no payment was made after signing up or subscription and transaction on the platform.
Survey conducted on 45 thousand people
LocalCircles had received over 45,000 responses from users of online payment platforms from 376 districts in the country. 67 per cent of users of payments platforms surveyed have experienced subscription trapping, where once they linked their bank account for UPI payments, they faced trouble in removing or canceling it. It is noteworthy that the government has banned this dark pattern of online forums from December 2023. Despite this, this game is still going on on online forums.
Fine up to Rs 10 lakh
The government had banned such unfair market practices in December 2023 itself and has made a provision for heavy fines for doing so. The government has clearly said that if an attempt is made to manipulate or mislead customers, a fine of Rs 10 lakh can be imposed on online platforms or e-commerce companies.
