Ranchi Additional Commissioner Vishal Srivastava’s court has sentenced former Jharkhand minister Yogendra Saw and his wife former MLA Nirmala Devi to 10 years in jail in the famous Chirudih violence case. The court held both of them in 2016 for obstructing the work of a project under construction of NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation), attacking the police-administration and inciting mob to violence, arson, rioting and attempt to murder. Convicted on 22 March.
The court acquitted Yogendra Sao and Nirmala Devi’s son Ankit Raj in the same case due to lack of evidence. Yogendra Sao is already in jail in several criminal cases, while his wife Nirmala Devi was sent to judicial custody after her conviction on March 22. The court sentenced them under sections 325, 326, 148, 307, 188, 153 and 120B of the IPC.
Former minister Yogendra Sao and former MLA Nirmala Devi, along with local villagers, organized Shroud Satyagraha against NTPC in the year 2015. In Chirudih of Barkagaon police station area, the agitators stopped the machines engaged in mining work. After this, Nirmala Devi, MLA of Barkagaon area, was arrested. Meanwhile, the villagers started pelting stones at the police. Meanwhile, the villagers took Nirmala Devi out of police custody. The police lathi-charged the crowd. Later, the police also opened fire, in which some people died. In this case, the administration had registered more than two dozen cases. Yogendra Sao has been acquitted in 11 of these cases. In this case, the prosecution had recorded the statements of 20 witnesses in the court to prove the charges against Yogendra Sau, while 7 witnesses were presented on behalf of the accused Yogendra Sau, Nirmala Devi and Ankit Raj.
Yogendra Sao and Nirmala Devi will now be declared legally unfit to contest elections after the court’s sentencing. Yogendra Sao has been MLA twice and Nirmala Devi once.
