How and why did BJP return to power
1. Modi Factor
In this election, PM Modi himself took over the command of BJP’s election campaign. He covered more than a hundred assembly seats in his campaign. Meanwhile, the success of vaccination against Corona, the return of Indians from Ukraine and Modi’s popularity in national and international forums played a big role in the return of the Yogi government. The image created in the mind of the public regarding the popularity of PM Modi and the rule of CM Yogi Adityanath blew all the equations.
2. Rule of law, bulldozer became a symbol
The popularity of Yogi Adityanath has increased significantly in the last 5 years. His tough attitude against the mafia and criminals instilled confidence in the public. Due to the better law and order of the state, BJP got full support of the people. At the same time, the mention of bulldozers strengthened the image of the Yogi government in the minds of the people. In fact, by running a bulldozer on the property of mafia and musclemen, CM Yogi created the image of a leader who is fearless and supportive of the public. Gradually the bulldozer became a symbol of the CM’s biggest domineering image.
3. Emphasis on development agenda
The BJP kept both Hindutva and development agendas side by side throughout the election. While the Vishwanath Corridor was inaugurated in Kashi, the foundation stone of five international airports in UP including Jewar was also inaugurated. Apart from this, the gift of Ganga Expressway, Bundelkhand Expressway, Purvanchal Expressway, Defense Corridor, Saryu Canal project was also given to UP. PM Modi laid the foundation stone of dozens of development schemes in the last 6 months. These projects not only cemented the development-oriented image of the BJP as a double engine, but also blunted the edge of the opposition’s allegations.
4. Benefit of Central Schemes
The Yogi government not only implemented the beneficial schemes of the Center in a better way in UP, but also campaigned fiercely. This proved to be a game changer for the BJP government. Schemes like Ujjwala, PM Awas Yojana, Ayushman Bharat, Kisan Samman Nidhi benefited women, which in this election turned into votes for BJP. Apart from this, the scheme with free ration turned the poor in favor of the Yogi government.
5. Economic progress of the state
The economic progress of the state also took place during the tenure of CM Yogi. The CM told that when there was Akhilesh Yadav government in UP, then the economy of the state was at the sixth place in the country. On the other hand, after the formation of the BJP government in UP, in the last 5 years, the state has jumped to the second place in the economic field. In these statements and speeches, the economic progress of UP got a constant place and it improved his image among the intellectuals. The educated urban class liked this logic of economic development more.
6. Familism and Racism
PM Modi and CM Yogi simultaneously targeted both the Congress and the Samajwadi Party, raising the issue of familyism and casteism. During the Akhilesh government, the appointment of his Yadav relatives was not hidden from anyone. Apart from this, everyone was also aware of ignoring Hindu interests in support of their minorities. Apart from this, the Samajwadi Party had formed a huge rainbow alliance of almost all the castes of the OBC community to balance the caste equation. This sent a message to the public that even after coming to power, this government would continue to engage in all these games instead of development.
7. Mistakes of the previous government
The Muzaffarnagar riots that broke out in 2013 during the reign of Akhilesh Yadav proved to be heavy for the SP this time too. In its election campaign, the BJP accused the SP of instigating the Muzaffarnagar riots of 2013 and giving shelter to the culprits. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s claim that after his government came to power, UP was free from communal riots, proved to be true. Comparatively, people got the point of CM Yogi right.
8. Tickets to the Wrong People
Akhilesh Yadav gave tickets to many such mafia elements, who were maligning his image. Apart from this, he also gave ticket to gangster leader Nahid Hasan, who is considered responsible for the exodus of Hindus from Kairana in 2016. Nahid Hasan was accused of threatening the Hindus living in Kairana and taking possession of their properties. The BJP raised the issue in many of its meetings and managed to consolidate Hindu votes.
9. Division of Muslim Votes
In the Uttar Pradesh elections, Asaduddin Owaisi’s party also caused good damage to the Samajwadi Party. AIMIM fielded candidates for a total of 103 seats. In UP, 143 seats are considered Muslim majority seats. The special thing was that the Muslim majority seats where Owaisi fielded candidates have traditionally been strongholds of SP-BSP. Apart from this, Congress also got some share of educated Muslim voters. Bahubali Muslim candidates also lost elections in Muslim-dominated areas because of votes. Owaisi’s landing caused a huge dent in the Muslim vote, especially the young Muslim vote bank, and the SP alliance suffered a significant loss of seats.
10. Mayawati’s Factor
Former Chief Minister and BSP supremo Mayawati remained calm throughout the UP elections. He neither held many election rallies nor made much rhetoric. But his party contested all the seats. Dalit vote in UP is around 21 per cent. Initially it was with the Congress, which later shifted to the BSP. In such a situation, his party neither got seats nor allowed its traditional Dalit votes to go to the SP. Impressed by the free ration, a large part of the Dalits went to the BJP, and the rest got divided into different parties. The biggest loss was to the Samajwadi Party, which was dreaming of victory on the basis of Dalit votes.
