Bangalore. A special bench of the Karnataka High Court on Tuesday dismissed the petitions filed by students seeking permission to wear hijab in classes. The court said that wearing hijab is not a mandatory part of Islam.
“The prescribing of school uniform is constitutional and students cannot object to it.”
The court dismissed all the petitions filed by the students. Detailed information about the decision is awaited.
Earlier, as a precaution, security was tightened across the state. A holiday was declared in schools and colleges in Dakshina Kannada, Kalaburagi and Shivamogga districts.
Most of the districts have imposed prohibitory orders in the vicinity of educational institutions. Bengaluru Police Commissioner Kamal Pant issued prohibitory orders prohibiting protests, gatherings and gatherings across the city for seven days from Monday.
The hijab controversy, which started in January as a protest by six students of Udupi Pre-University Girls’ College, turned into a major crisis and was discussed internationally.
