WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange will be extradited to the US. A UK court has found Assange guilty of publishing secret files related to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. The court has ordered that Assange be extradited to the US, where he will face 175 years in prison. The defense has until May 18 to appeal against the court’s decision. This order of the court will go to UK Home Minister Priti Patel. If Priti Patel approves the extradition of Assange, then Assange’s lawyers can move the UK High Court to challenge the decision.
Significantly, the US wants to prosecute Julian Assange for making public 50 thousand secret files related to military operations during the Afghanistan-Iraq war. America has been trying for the last several years to extradite Assange to America. In February last year, Assange’s lawyers argued in court that Assange could commit suicide if he was extradited to the US and kept in a high-security area. In response, the US government said that Assange would not be sentenced to isolation and that he would be fully taken care of.
Earlier last month, the UK Supreme Court did not allow Assange to file an appeal against extradition to the US. Assange’s lawyer, Bernberg Pearce, argued that Assange could face a life sentence in the US.
