This is the first medal for the Indian women’s team in the 61-year history of the championship. The men’s team had earlier won a bronze medal in 2012.
In the men’s section, Amit Khatri of India was leading till the last kilometer but was disqualified from the under-20 men’s 10 kilometer category after getting his fourth red card. Had he reached the finish line earlier, he could not have won the gold as he was awarded a 60-minute penalty after the third red card. However, he would have been in the top ten if he had not got his fourth red card. Wang Hongren of China won the gold, Diego Ji of Italy won the silver and Zeng Yu of China won the bronze.
