There has been an uproar over the statement of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. In fact, Mamata Banerjee had offered to give shelter to Bangladeshi refugees in Bengal. Regarding this statement, the Bangladesh government has strongly objected to Mamata Banerjee’s comments before the Indian High Commission. It has said that Mamata Banerjee’s tweet was provocative and wrong things were said about the internal affairs of Bangladesh.

The Bangladesh government said it was trying to restore normalcy in its country and such comments by the West Bengal chief minister, especially on the death of students, were misleading. Such comments, especially the assurance of shelter to people, could provoke many people, especially terrorists and mischievous elements, to take advantage of the announcement.

What was CM Mamata’s statement?

Mamata Banerjee had said in TMC’s Shaheed Diwas rally on July 21 that Bengal will keep its doors open for distressed people from the neighbouring country and will give them shelter. She had said that if helpless people knock on the doors of West Bengal, we will definitely give them shelter. The Chief Minister had said that Bengal will do this because there is a United Nations proposal to accommodate refugees in areas around the unrest areas.

The TMC supremo later reiterated the promise while posting on social media platform ‘X’. She had said, “Hundreds of students and others are returning to West Bengal or India from crisis-hit Bangladesh. I have asked my state administration to provide all help and assistance to the returnees. For instance, around 300 students reached Hili border and most left safely for their respective destinations. However, 35 of them needed help and we provided them basic amenities and facility support.”

Sent notice to Indian government

After this, Bangladesh has sent an official note to the Indian government in the matter. Bangladesh Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud said that with respect to the Chief Minister of West Bengal, we want to make it clear that there is a lot of scope for confusion in her comments, so we have given a note to the Indian government.

It is worth noting that students in Bangladesh are protesting violently demanding the abolition of reservation in government jobs, in which more than 100 people have died. In view of the violence, there was a nationwide internet blackout since last week. Limited connectivity was restored on Tuesday night, with companies such as banks, technology firms and media outlets being given priority.
