New Delhi. Do you know that 36 percent of the children born in India between 0 to 5 years are dwarfs. Their height was found to be less than the set standards. We are not saying this but the Ministry of Women and Child Welfare itself has made this claim. It was told that about 17 percent of the children of this age group were found to be underweight while six percent were found to be weak. These three symptoms are found in children suffering from malnutrition. Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of dwarf children in the country. On the same lines, Madhya Pradesh has the highest number of underweight children.

Stunting refers to children who are very short for their age. This is usually due to long-term malnutrition. Similarly, wasted children refer to children who are very thin for their height, indicating acute malnutrition due to severe underweight. Such children weigh less than their height for their age.

In response to a question in the Lok Sabha, Women and Child Development Minister Annapurna Devi said that according to the data of ‘Poshan Tracker’ of June 2024, the height of about 8.57 crore children under the age of six was measured, out of which 35 percent were found to be dwarfs, while 17 percent were underweight and six percent of children under the age of five were found to be underweight. She also shared state-wise data, according to which Uttar Pradesh has the highest rate of dwarfism at 46.36 percent, followed by Lakshadweep at 46.31 percent.

There are more underweight children in Madhya Pradesh…
According to the data, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh recorded stunting rates of 44.59 per cent and 41.61 per cent respectively. The rate of wasting among children in Bihar and Gujarat is 9.81 per cent and 9.16 per cent respectively. In terms of underweight children, Madhya Pradesh leads with 26.21 per cent, followed by Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu with 26.41 per cent.
