Abuja (Nigeria): The Nigerian government has imposed a fine of US $ 220 million on Meta. The Nigerian government announced this fine on Meta on Friday. The government said that in its investigation, the company was found to have violated the country’s data protection and consumer rights laws related to Facebook and WhatsApp “multiple times”. That is, the government did not find Meta fit in terms of security. A statement from Nigeria’s Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) listed five ways in which Meta has violated data laws in the West African country.
These practices include sharing data of Nigerians without authorisation, depriving users of the right to determine the use of their data, and discriminatory behaviour as well as abusing market dominance. “Having been satisfied with the significant evidence on record and having afforded the Meta Parties every opportunity to explain their position, the Commission has now issued a final order and imposed the fine on the Meta Parties,” FCCPC Chief Executive Officer Adamu Abdullahi said in a statement.
Meta company was violating security and privacy
According to the Nigerian government, Meta was violating the rules of privacy and national security of citizens. This action has been taken after several cases of violation came to light. A Meta spokesperson has not yet responded to a request for comment on this decision. FCCPC fined Meta US $ 220 million and ordered the company to comply with local laws and stop “exploiting” Nigerian consumers. (AP)
