As per the strategy, at around 10:30 am, Flight Lieutenant Anupam Banerjee, Flight Lieutenant A Mondakot, Flight Lieutenant Nachiketa and Flight Lieutenant B Khatana, who were part of the wolf pack, took off with their fighter jets to destroy Munthodhalo. At around 11 am, the wolf pack attacked the enemy positions at Munthodhalo with bombs and rockets.
After the attack, the fighter jets had just turned towards the Srinagar base when Flight Lieutenant Nachiketa’s jet crashed. Flight Lieutenant Nachiketa was forced to eject from the jet. Flight Lieutenant Mondokot, who was flying in Flight Lieutenant Nachiketa’s pair, tried to search for him, but due to low fuel in the jet, he was forced to return to the Srinagar base. After this information, the enemy attacked both these jets which reached Munthodhalo with a Stinger missile. Squadron Leader Ahuja was forced to eject from the jet. And when his parachute reached the ground, he came to know that he was in Pakistan. The Pakistani army took him prisoner. He was tortured to know the secret and finally he was killed. However, in the meantime, Flight Lieutenant Nachiketa was released by the Pakistani army and he was brought to India via Wagah border on 3 June.
Despite these failures in the beginning of Operation ‘Safed Sagar’, the Indian Air Force did not give up. Rather, it attacked the enemy with many times more strength and enthusiasm. In no time, the enemy’s bases on the peaks of Dras, Kargil and Batalik were destroyed. At the same time, this action of the Indian Air Force also strengthened the action of the Indian Army. It was the result of this courage of the Indian military forces that the enemy was forced to flee in just two months.
