PM Modi: 'I am surprised by the understanding and mentality of some people', PM Modi gave a befitting reply to those who questioned the Agneepath scheme on Kargil Vijay Diwas

New Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tribute to the martyrs of the 1999 Kargil War at the Drass War Memorial, commemorating India’s victory over Pakistan on the 25th anniversary of the conflict. The Prime Minister paid tribute at the memorial in honour of the officers and soldiers of the armed forces who made the supreme sacrifice in the service of the nation. During the ceremony, Prime Minister Modi also addressed critics of the Army’s Agneepath scheme, stressing its importance and benefits. Addressing the importance of the Agneepath scheme on the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas, Prime Minister Modi said, “The truth is that the Agneepath scheme will increase the strength of the country and encourage capable youth to serve the motherland. I am amazed at the understanding and mindset of some people. They are spreading the misconception that the government has launched this scheme to save pension funds. I am ashamed of such thinking, but I want to ask these people whether there is a need to immediately give pension to the new recruits under the Modi government?

Focus on national policy more than politics

PM Modi further said, “Pension will be needed in 30 years, by then I will be 105 years old. What kind of logic is this? For me, nation comes before any political party. We work for national policy, not for politics. Those who are misleading the youth of our country have a history of not caring about soldiers. These are the same people who made false promises about One Rank One Pension (OROP) with a budget of Rs 500 crore. Our government implemented OROP and gave an amount of more than Rs 1.25 lakh crore to ex-servicemen.”

Criticism from the opposition

Taking a dig at the opposition, PM Modi said, “These are the same people who did not build a war memorial for the martyrs even after seven decades of independence. These are the same people who did not provide enough bulletproof jackets to our soldiers deployed on the border.” The Indian Army had announced the successful completion of Operation Vijay on 26 July 1999 after nearly three months of fierce fighting on the snowy peaks of Kargil in Ladakh. Every year 26 July is celebrated as ‘Kargil Vijay Diwas’ to commemorate India’s victory over Pakistan in the war.
