Washington: Some top lawmakers boycotted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to the US Parliament on Wednesday. Meanwhile, thousands of people marched towards the country’s capital Washington in protest. During his address, Netanyahu defended the ongoing war in Gaza and condemned American protesters. He vowed to continue the 9-month-long war until “complete victory”. Netanyahu also requested to increase the aid being given by the US in the war against Hamas.

“We win, they lose”

The Israeli prime minister said, “The United States and Israel must stand with each other. When we stand together, something really big happens: we win, they lose.” Netanyahu defended his country over the war while also mocking those who oppose it. He pointed to street protests near the US capital and described them as “benefiting” Israel’s opponents.

Kamala Harris was not present

Many MPs clapped during Netanyahu’s address, but prominent MPs of the Democratic Party did not do so. More than 50 MPs of the Democratic Party and independent MP Bernie Sanders boycotted Netanyahu’s address. During this, everyone’s eyes were on the absence of Vice President Kamala Harris, who is the chairman of the upper house of Parliament, the Senate. It is said that she did not attend the House due to a pre-scheduled program. Apart from this, Democratic Party MP from Washington Patty Murray refused to be present during the address. Democratic Party MP from Michigan Rashida Tlaib also boycotted the address.

Netanyahu lashed out at protesters

Netanyahu accused many protesters in the US of standing with terrorists who, according to Netanyahu, killed children during a Hamas attack on October 7. Republican vice-presidential candidate JD Vance was also absent from Netanyahu’s address, citing his busy election campaign. Noa Arghamani, an Israeli hostage freed during a rescue operation in Gaza, was also present on the occasion.

Police stopped the protesters

Netanyahu has become the first foreign leader to address a joint session of both houses of Parliament four times, surpassing former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Meanwhile, more than 39 thousand people have died so far in the ongoing war in Gaza. Widespread protests were also seen in America regarding this. The protesters condemned Netanyahu’s failure to release Israeli and American hostages held hostage after the attack on Israel on October 7. Police used pepper spray to stop the crowd of protesters moving towards the US capital Washington. (AP)
