Tokyo: According to the data released by the Japanese government, the country’s total population has declined for the 15th consecutive year. According to the data, the population has decreased by more than five lakhs because the number of elderly people in the population is the highest and along with this the birth rate remains low. Last year, the lowest number of children were born in Japan, only 7,30,000, while 15.8 lakh people died during this period. According to the data, the total population of Japan on January 1 was 12.49 crores.

The number of foreign residents increased

According to data released by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the number of foreign residents rose by 11 percent, taking their population in the country to more than 3 million for the first time. Foreign-born people make up three percent of the country’s population and most of them are between 15 and 64, which is of working age. According to surveys, young Japanese are becoming reluctant to get married or have children as they are discouraged by poor job prospects, high cost of living, gender-discriminatory corporate practices that only burden women and working mothers.

Government took steps

The government has made a provision of US$34 billion in the 2024 budget to encourage young couples to have more children. The report estimates that by 2070, Japan’s population will decline by about 30 percent to 87 million and at that time four out of every 10 people will be 65 years or older. (Language)
