India’s top female badminton player PV Sindhu clinched her second women’s singles title of the current season by defeating Busanan Ongbamrangphan of Thailand in the final of the Swiss Open Super 300 tournament here on Sunday.
Playing her second successive final in the tournament, two-time Olympic medalist Sindhu defeated fourth seed Thailand’s 21-16, 21-8 in a 49-minute bout at St. Jacobshalle here. This is Sindhu’s 16th win in 17 matches against Busanan. She has lost to him only once at the 2019 Hong Kong Open.
Sindhu had lost to Rio Olympic gold medalist Carolina Marin of Spain in last season’s final. The 26-year-old from Hyderabad, however, has fond memories of the venue. He won a gold medal at the World Championships here in 2019. Sindhu had won the Syed Modi International Super 300 in Lucknow in January this year. The Super 300 tournament is the second lowest level of the BWF (World Badminton Federation) tour programme.
Sindhu made an aggressive start in this match and took a 3-0 lead. Busanan, however, made a comeback and leveled the score at 7-7. Busanan was trying to keep Sindhu away from the net but was unable to finish her shot properly. Sindhu had a two-point lead at the break.
A brilliant shot near the backline earned Sindhu four game points and it was not too late to capitalize on it.
In the second game, Busanan failed to compete with Sindhu. Sindhu made it 18-4 after taking a 5-0 lead and then went on to win the match easily.
