Javed Akhtar opened up on the portrayal of modern Indian women in films. During an episode of ‘We Are Yuva!’, the veteran lyricist and screenwriter criticised the 2012 blockbuster ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ for a dialogue spoken by a female character.

The veteran lyricist said- ‘There was a movie of Yash Chopra sahab, Jab Tak Hai Jaan. There is a dialogue in it, in which the heroine says- ‘I will marry after sleeping with a boy from every nationality in the world!’ Hey brother why will you work so hard? Are you empowered? Are you modern? Are you cool? Are you forward thinking? I agree, you don’t need to work so hard. There are many nationalities in the world, don’t get involved in them.’

He further said- ‘Now what is this? What is the meaning of this dialogue? Where are you coming? In Yash Chopra’s film! Because they want to show that the girl is self-reliant.
They don’t know what a strong girl is, that’s why they are exaggerating.’ Let us tell you, the romantic-drama ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ released in October 2012 was directed by Yash Chopra and made under the banner of Yash Raj Films and was one of the most successful films of the year. Shahrukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma appeared in lead roles in it. This was Yash Chopra’s last film.
