The Congress on Friday accused the opposition party in Assam of “cheating” them in the Rajya Sabha polls. The Congress claimed that MLAs of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) had visited Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s residence after the election.
“Five AIUDF MLAs came to the chief minister’s residence today (Friday) at around 8 am. They have maligned the image of Assam. This is a betrayal in the Rajya Sabha elections,” the Congress official said.
Congress tweeted the letter and wrote, “Truth will win. BJP won Rajya Sabha seats with the support of AIUDF. 5 MLAs of AIUDF were seen meeting the CM early morning at his residence.”
The Bharatiya Janata Party and its ally United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) won both the Rajya Sabha seats from Assam, where voting was held late on Wednesday night.
As per the calculations, Congress candidate Ripun Bora was set to win a seat in Assam with the collective support of all the opposition parties. Earlier, the AIUDF had also announced its support to Ripun Bora. However, he lost the election after cross voting between the MLAs of Congress and AIUDF.
In the Rajya Sabha elections, BJP candidate Pabitra Margherita got 46 votes, while her ally UPPL candidate Ravangavra Narzari got 44 votes. Congress candidate Ripun Bora got 35 votes while one vote was rejected.
Assam assembly panel will investigate
Assam Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary on Friday decided to constitute a House committee to examine whether five MLAs of the opposition AIUDF had visited the Chief Minister’s residence in the early hours of Friday, hours after the results of the two Rajya Sabha seats were declared.
Congress spokesperson Manjit Mahanta alleged that five MLAs of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) entered the chief minister’s residence at 6 am and stayed there till around 8.30 am. The Speaker decided to conduct an inquiry after accepting Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s request in this regard.
