The team reached the spot as soon as it got the green signal from the High Court for the CBI investigation in the Birbhum violence case. Several houses were torched in Rampurhat on Tuesday night. Eight people had died in this incident. The postmortem report also said that people were beaten up before burning them. Yesterday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had also reached Rampurhat village.
The Calcutta High Court had given a setback to the West Bengal government and said that the police cannot investigate this matter. The state government wanted to hand over the investigation to the SIT. The High Court has asked the CBI to submit its progress report by April 7. The High Court took suo motu cognizance of the matter and heard it.
On Tuesday, some people set several houses on fire in Rampurhat. Eight people, including three women and two children, died in this. Earlier a TMC leader named Bhadu Sheikh was murdered. The villagers say that the whole matter is of mutual enmity. The quarrel between these families was going on for almost 10 years. Last year too, a man from the same family was shot dead.
Mamta Banerjee had reached Birbhum and met the families of the victims and handed over checks of five lakhs each to the families of the deceased. Apart from this, two lakh rupees will be given for the construction of houses of those whose houses have been burnt. One person in the family of those who died will also be given a job.
