Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators on Friday staged a protest against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the assembly premises, demanding her statement on the Birbhum violence.
BJP MLAs told news agency ANI “The SIT was an attempt by the state government to suppress facts. We had demanded a CBI inquiry into the matter so that the truth could be revealed. We will approach the High Court to order a CBI probe in the matter.” Thank you. We believe that a fair investigation will now be conducted and justice will be given to the victims and their families.”
“We also demand that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee inform the House about the entire incident and discuss it in the House. Our protest will continue till the Chief Minister gives a statement on the matter in the House,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Calcutta High Court on Friday ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the matter. The High Court sought a report which is to be submitted by April 7. The case was being probed by an SIT set up by the West Bengal government.
At least eight people were killed after a mob torched houses following the killing of Trinamool Congress leader Bhadu Sheikh in West Bengal’s Birbhum’s Rampurhat area on Tuesday.
West Bengal Director General of Police (DGP) Manoj Malviya said that 11 people have been arrested in this case so far.
