The counting of votes for the assembly elections held on February 14 in Goa has started. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state is trying to come to power for the third time in a row, while the opposition Congress is hopeful of a clear mandate in its favor this time. Goa saw a multi-cornered contest, with 302 candidates contesting for 40 assembly seats in Goa due to the presence of two major political parties, the BJP and the Congress, as well as several smaller and regional outfits.
Election officials said the counting of votes would take place at two places. Counting of votes is underway for the assembly constituencies falling in North Goa district and South Goa district respectively at Damodar College in Margao and Government Polytechnic College in Altinho, Panaji. Most of the exit polls have projected a fractured mandate in Goa, forcing political parties to plan their strategy keeping in mind the post-counting situation. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant trailing by 446 votes
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant is trailing Congress candidate Dharmesh Sangalani in the state’s Sankhali seat in early trends. According to the Election Commission website, Sangalani is leading by over 446 votes over Sawant in Sankhali. At the same time, Goa Forward Party (GFP) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) are leading in one seat each.
