India defeated Sri Lanka by an innings and 222 runs in the first match of the two-match Test series. Batting first, India declared their first innings at 574 for 8 on the second day of the match. In response, Sri Lanka’s team was reduced to just 174 runs in their first innings. India bundled out for 174 in the first innings and forced them to play a follow-on. In the second innings as well, the Sri Lankan team looked completely under pressure and could only manage 178 runs in 60 overs in this innings. For India, Jadeja took 4 and Ashwin took 4 wickets.
All-rounder and left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja (5 for 41 and 4 for 46) helped India take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series against Sri Lanka.
India declared their first innings at 574 for eight. India bundled out Sri Lanka for 174 in the first innings and dealt them 178 runs in the second innings to win the match by an innings margin. Sri Lanka lost their 16 wickets in the third day’s play.
Jadeja took five wickets for 41 runs in the first innings and four for 46 in the second innings. Jadeja scored an unbeaten 175 in India’s first innings. Jadeja received the Player of the Match award for this excellent performance. India thus won Virat Kohli’s 100th Test. The second and final Test of the series will be played in Bengaluru.
Apart from Jadeja, off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took four wickets for 47 runs to become India’s second highest wicket-taker behind Kapil Dev (434). Fast bowler Mohammed Shami took two wickets for 48 runs.
Earlier, Sri Lanka started playing four wickets ahead of 108 runs on the third day of the match and lost the remaining six wickets adding 66 runs. Jadeja, who took one wicket yesterday, completed his five-wicket haul with four wickets today. Sri Lanka’s fifth wicket fell on the score of 161 and after that its remaining five wickets fell by adding only 10 runs. Jadeja took four wickets while one wicket each went to Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami.
Pathum Nisanka made 26 and Charit Aslanka extended his innings by one run. Both played cautiously to take the score to 161 but as soon as Bumrah broke the partnership with Aslanka, it did not take long for Sri Lanka’s innings to collapse. Nisanka remained unbeaten on 61 runs off 133 balls with the help of 11 fours while wickets kept falling one after the other at the other end. Jadeja took five wickets for 41 runs in 13 overs while Bumrah and Ashwin got two wickets each and Shami got one wicket.
