Torrential rains cause devastation, chaos from Mumbai to Pune, panic due to landslide


Mumbai/Pune. The northern and eastern parts of the country have not seen continuous heavy rains for the last few days. On the other hand, it seems that the patience of Lord Indra has broken in many states of the western region. Heavy rains are continuously occurring in states like Gujarat, Maharashtra, Konkan, Goa, Gujarat. Torrential rains have made life difficult for the common people. Water is visible everywhere – residential colonies, railway tracks, airports, roads. Severe waterlogging has occurred in many areas of Mumbai. On the other hand, heavy to very heavy rains have also worsened the condition of Pune. The roads are so waterlogged that even vehicles have drowned in it. On the other hand, there is panic among the people due to landslides in Lavasa.

Due to heavy rains in Mumbai, at least 11 flights were cancelled on Thursday and about 10 flights were diverted to nearby airports. Runway operations had to be halted twice at Mumbai airport as visibility dropped to 300 metres. The airline has issued an advisory for passengers to reach the airport early in view of traffic jams and waterlogging in parts of Mumbai. An airport source said that due to bad weather and low visibility, runway operations were first halted for 11 minutes from 8.32 am to 8.43 am and then for 19 minutes from 10.36 am to 10.55 am. Visibility had dropped to 300 metres due to heavy rains.

11 flights cancelled at Mumbai airport
A total of 11 flights arriving and departing from Mumbai airport during the day were cancelled. These included 10 IndiGo flights. Air India cancelled one flight departing from Mumbai. Apart from this, 10 flights were diverted to nearby airports like Ahmedabad, Surat, Hyderabad, Indore and Goa’s Mopa airport. The source said that all the flights reached Mumbai later. Air India said in a post on X, ‘Heavy rains in Mumbai have affected flight operations and as a result some flights were cancelled and some were diverted. Air India is offering full refund or free ticket booking once again for confirmed bookings for travel on 25 July 2024.’

Destruction in Pune too
Amid heavy rains in Pune, one person died, while two people are feared trapped in three bungalows in Lavasa City that were hit by a landslide. Police officials said that Lavasa, a private city about 65 km from Pune city, received 453 mm of rain during the last 24 hours till 8:30 am on Thursday. The district’s Mulshi tehsil has been receiving continuous rain since Wednesday evening. Lavasa also falls in this tehsil area. According to the police, two people who were working as caretakers are feared trapped in one of the three bungalows that were hit by a landslide in the early hours in Dasave village.
