NITI Aayog was brought in place of the ‘Planning Commission’, which was formed in 1950 after independence, for the long-term implementation of the policies of the central government for the development of the country. After the Bharatiya Janata Party government came to power in 2014, NITI Aayog was formed on 1 January 2015. It is considered the think-tank of the Government of India. NITI Aayog works to achieve the country’s sustainable development goals as well as monitor them. It has the dual responsibility of promoting competitive and cooperative federalism among the states and union territories of the central government. It also determines the contribution of the states in the development of the country.

Why was Niti Aayog formed?
According to the website of the Indian government, keeping in mind the changing times, it was decided to replace the Planning Commission with NITI Aayog (National Institute for Transforming India). Before the formation of NITI Aayog, extensive consultations were held with Chief Ministers, experts, economists and the general public through MyGov.

How does Niti Aayog work?
Niti Aayog, known as the think tank of the central government, works on three time periods. The central government has set a time period from the implementation of its plans to their review. The first one is 3 years, the second one is 7 years- mid term strategy term and the third one is 15 years- vision document term.
