The controversy over the fake certificate of trainee IAS officer Pooja Khedkar has given birth to a new debate. A senior bureaucrat Smita Sabharwal has raised questions on giving reservation to the disabled in IAS jobs. She says that the work of an IAS is very tiring and challenging. In such a situation, why is there a need for reservation for recruitment to this important post? Maharashtra’s trainee IAS officer Pooja Khedkar was accused of getting a government job from the disabled quota on the basis of a fake certificate.

The allegations against Pooja Khedkar are under investigation. Her mother was also accused of threatening the farmers with a gun and she was absconding. However, the police arrested her from a hotel.

What did Smita Sabharwal say?

Senior bureaucrat Smita Sabharwal has questioned the need for a quota for the specially-abled in civil services, which is now leading to a controversy. Smita Sabharwal, member-secretary of the Telangana Finance Commission, said field work makes it tough for people with disabilities. “With all due respect to the differently-abled. Would any airline hire a differently-abled pilot? Or would you trust a differently-abled surgeon. The nature of #AIS (IAS/IPS/IFoS) is field-work, long tiring hours, hearing people’s grievances directly. Which requires physical fitness. Why does this premier service need this quota in the first place!” she wrote on social media platform X.

Many officials, people associated with this profession including those who train for competitive exams and common people are reacting to this post of Smita Sabharwal. Many people believe that this statement of Smita is completely wrong and is going to divide the society.
