New Delhi. Kamala Pujari, a well-known woman farmer who promoted organic farming, died today. She was 76 years old and was ill for the last few days. Kamala Pujari had made her mark worldwide by cultivating more than 100 varieties of rice. For this important contribution in the field of agriculture, the Government of India honored Kamala Pujari with the Padma Shri Award in 2019. The Odisha government also honored her with the Best Woman Farmer Award in 2004. Kamala Pujari was ill for many days due to kidney related disease. Two days ago, she was admitted to the District Hospital in Cuttack where she died of a heart attack today.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also very impressed by Kamala Pujari. The PM expressed condolences on her demise. Remembering Kamala Pujari on a social media post, the Prime Minister wrote, Kamala Pujari ji made a remarkable contribution to agriculture, especially in promoting organic farming practices and protecting indigenous seeds. Kamala Pujari, who was originally born in a tribal family of Odisha, went from village to village to make women and men aware about organic farming and the use of organic fertilizers.
