The government has approved the consideration of a private bill that gives the right to free internet to every citizen of the country. This bill talks about providing free internet to the backward and poor sections of the country. So that every citizen of the country can join the Digital India initiative. The purpose of the bill is that no Indian citizen should be away from internet connectivity. For this, free internet should be provided by the government.
The bill came in December 2023
The Free Internet Bill was tabled in the Rajya Sabha in December 2023. The bill was introduced by V Sivadasan, a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), i.e. CPM. According to the new update, Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has told the Rajya Sabha Secretary General that the President has recommended consideration of this bill. The bill states that either the government should directly provide free internet to the people or fully subsidize the services of a service provider.
Many countries have free internet
According to the bill, if a citizen is not able to recharge his internet, then it is the government’s responsibility to provide him free internet. However, it is not yet known to whom free internet will be available. It is not yet known how many GB of free internet will be available and what will be its rules. This bill emphasizes on the right to internet just like the right to speech. At present, many countries like Lithuania, Singapore and Switzerland are providing free internet to their citizens.
