Washington: Eating burgers from the famous food chain ‘McDonald’s’ in America has caused the spread of E.coli bacteria infection, causing at least 49 people in 10 states to fall ill and one of them has also died. Giving information, health officials said that 10 infected people have been admitted to the hospital.

Where did the cases come from?

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said that an elderly person has died in Colorado due to this infection and a child has been admitted to the hospital due to serious kidney problems. Cases of this infection were reported in Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Oregon, Utah, Wyoming and Wisconsin between September 27 and October 11. The highest number of 27 cases were recorded in Colorado followed by nine cases in Nebraska.

Infected people had eaten burgers

According to the CDC, all of the people found infected reported that they had eaten a McDonald’s ‘Quarter Pounder Hamburger’ before falling ill. The US Department of Agriculture, Food and Drug Administration and state health officials are also investigating the case. The specific ingredients associated with the contamination have not been identified but investigators are focusing on onions and beef.

McDonald’s told the CDC that it had removed chopped onions and ‘beef patties’ from its locations in the affected states. The burger is possibly temporarily unavailable in the affected states. E. coli bacteria grow in the intestines of animals and are found in the environment. This infection can cause fever, stomach cramps, and bloody diarrhea. McDonald’s shares fell nine percent on Tuesday after the CDC announcement. (AP)
